people have to ask themselves, is the reason governor romney is keeping all these plans to replace secret because they're too good? >> what we're seeing right now in my view is a trickle-down government approach which thinks that government can do a better job than free people pursuing their dreams. >> it's thursday, october 4th, and "starting point" begins right now. >> good morning! welcome, everybody. our starting point this morning is the morning after debate night in america. both candidates are on the campaign trail today, again, after the first of three presidential debates, the first one, of course, in denver last night. president obama and mitt romney going toe to toe on critical issues, like the economy and health care. and by most accounts, it was mitt romney who emerged the victor. lots of debate analysis ahead on "starting point." we'll be talking live with john mccain of arizona and rand paul of kentucky. from team obama, we'll be speaking with martin o'malley and campaign spokeswoman, jen psaki. plus, obama's former economic adviser, austan goolsbee. first, though, a look a

, and if you are going to save any money through what governor romney's proposing, what has to happen is that the money has to come from somewhere. and when you move to a voucher system, you are putting seniors at the mercy of those insurance companies, and over time, if traditional medicare has decayed or fallen apart, then they're stuck. and this is the reason why aarp has said that your plan would weaken medicare, substantially, and that's why they were supportive of the approach that we took. one last point i want to make. we do have to lower the cost of health care. not just in medicare -- >> in a minute. >> but overall. >> okay. >> that's a big topic. >> i want to get to it. all i want to do, very quickly, before we leave the economy -- >> let's get back to medicare. the president said that the government could provide the service at a lower cost and without a profit. if that's the case then it will always be the best product that people can purchase. >> just a minute, governor. >> my experience is the private sector is typically able to provide a better product at a lower cost.

's debate. more importantly, this is a stage where president obama and governor mitt romney will hopefully define their positions on the key domestic issues facing our nation. that's what's on the agenda for this debate tonight; jobs, the economy, health care. but first, a new distraction for the obama campaign during a critical week. it comes in the form of a video released by "the daily caller" of then-presidential candidate barack obama back in 2007. in it he speaks to a group mostly made up of black pastors. his speech got some coverage at the time he delivered it, but his prepared remarks did not include some of the off-the-cuff, off-prompter moments, if you will, alluding to alleged racism to hurricane katrina and spending decisions made by our elected leaders. our chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel is live in washington with more. mike? >> reporter: hi, megyn. the tone has attracted some attention with then-candidate obama sounding different as he spoke to a large group of african-american religious leaders in virginia. one major topic was mr. obama trying to contrast th

to persuade people that governor romney is the guy they should vote for. at the national level, that means they need to fix whatever has gone so wrong with their campaign message and they need to stop doing whatever it is that has turned so many people off to their candidate. when you ask voters whether they like this mitt romney guy, the answer is a very, very plain answer. no. his favorable ratings are in the low 40s. almost 10 points lower than the ratings for president obama. lower, even, than the famously unpopular former president george w. bush right now. swing state voters say they do not think that mitt romney cares about the needs and problems of people like them. some of mr. romney's numbers are just shockingly bad. i mean double check. shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%. in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to get themselves to this point, whether it's mr. romney's tax returns, or the lack thereof, or getting rich by laying off fact

krauthammer is giving his analysis they got to see governor romney but wednesday offering a different view of him. >> romney had the highest negatives at this stage of the campaign in any challenger in three decades. they work only up to until they collide with reality. reality is a debate where you see the real guy for the first time and you get this remarkable reaction in the cbs poll 56 percent of respondents said their opinion of romney had risen. their opinion of romney had been that he is a rapacious capitalist gecko that cares for nobody except himself and money. they see a reasonable guy tough and respectful and they realize all of the ads they have seen are false. the point that you brought up where you said it was the best line romney had about he's the guy who wants to raise taxes on the middle class and reduce taxes on the rich, romney took the beginning of that debate and attacked each of the points and demolished them. all of that came from negative advertising. i think what he did last night is he dissolved $150 million of negative ads and turned themmed to dust. >>> the can

about governor romney. you don't hear the positive ones either, but there are times in corporate life, you don't hear lots of people coming out of the word work saying he was a terrible loss. >> i would agree with everything you have said. i think it could begin to change shortly. because that is the story that is left to tell. i have known the people that work for him. he is surrounded by a very loyal and find people. i judge people by the company the key. this stirling's a vote of people. -- sterling stable of people. he's private. to him, it feels like bragging to tell these stories and it draws attention to his religion which he is reluctant to spend a lot of time on. there were people talking now, trying to encourage these stories and getting people to talk openly about their experiences. what is surprising is not so much his view on issues, but the thing that made him an attractive national candidate was the fact that he was able to work across the auto and he was, in fact, a moderate. in order to get the nomination, he had to go so hard right in order to bring those people on b
